Doubao-Seed-2.0-Pro: Now the Cheap Tier, Not the Old One

Doubao-Seed-2.0-Pro is no longer ByteDance’s current flagship. Seed 2.1 Pro and Seed 2.1 Turbo launched on 24 June 2026 at the Volcano Engine FORCE conference. But 2.0 Pro is not a deprecated model you should avoid, and this is the part nobody explains: at $0.47 per million input tokens and $2.37 output, it now sits at roughly half the price of Seed 2.1 Pro, which runs about $0.85 input and $4.15 output. So 2.0 Pro has become the budget tier rather than the obsolete one, and for a specific set of tasks it is still the correct pick.

Here are the numbers, the comparison that actually matters, and the caveat that should decide it for a lot of readers.

Specifications and benchmarks

Seed 2.0 Pro was released on 14 February 2026. Published scores:

Benchmark Score
AIME 2025 98.3
Codeforces (Elo) 3020
LiveCodeBench v6 87.8
GPQA Diamond 88.9%
VideoMME (long video) 89.5
SWE-bench Verified 76.5%

The context window is 256K. ByteDance has not disclosed parameter counts or architecture.

Read that table carefully, because it tells a specific story. The math and reasoning scores are genuinely frontier-class: 98.3 on AIME 2025 and 88.9% on GPQA Diamonds are excellent numbers at any price, let alone this one. The 89.5 on long-video understanding is a real differentiator, and video is where this model is least matched by its price peers.

The SWE-bench Verified score of 76.5% is the outlier, and it is the one that matters if you are buying this for agentic coding.

The comparison that decides it

Most articles will compare Doubao to GPT or Claude and conclude it is dramatically cheaper. That is true, and it is the wrong comparison, because the real competition at this price point is the other open-weight models, and there Doubao loses on coding by a wide margin.

On SWE-bench Verified, the same benchmark throughout:

Model SWE-bench Verified Price in/out per 1M
Claude Opus 5 97.0% $5.00 / $25.00
GLM-5.3 95.4% $1.19 / $3.74
Kimi K3 93.4% $2.50 / $14.00
Doubao-Seed-2.0-Pro 76.5% $0.47 / $2.37

GLM-5.3 costs 2.5 times more on input than Doubao 2.0 Pro and scores 18.9 points higher on the same benchmark. For agentic coding work, that is not a close decision. Paying two and a half times as much for nineteen points is good value in almost any budget.

So the honest positioning is this: Doubao-Seed-2.0-Pro is not the best cheap coding model. It is a strong, cheap reasoning and multimodal model. Those are different products, and the pricing pages do not distinguish between them.

For the coding decision specifically, our comparison of GLM 5.1 vs Claude Opus 4.6 covers the open-weight substitution question, and our roundup of the best AI for coding goes wider.

Where 2.0 Pro is genuinely the right choice

  • Math and quantitative reasoning at volume. 98.3 on AIME 2025 for $0.47 input is arguably the best price-performance in the category. If you are processing quantitative problems in bulk, this is a serious option.
  • Long-video understanding. 89.5 on VideoMME is the specification that is hardest to match anywhere near this price. If video is your workload, start here.
  • Scientific question answering. 88.9% on GPQA Diamond is close to the frontier for a fraction of frontier pricing.
  • High-volume classification, extraction, and summarization. At this price the benchmark differences stop mattering because the tasks are not hard.
  • Budget-constrained experimentation. If you are prototyping and cost per experiment is the constraint, the gap to 2.1 Pro buys you twice as many runs.

And where it is the wrong choice

Agentic coding. Covered above. GLM-5.3 is the better buy at this end of the market.

Anything touching legal, HR or regulatory content outside China. This is the caveat that should carry the most weight for most readers of this site, and it is stated plainly in independent reviews: the model carries a Chinese-centric training bias. That is not a criticism of the model, it is a description of what it was optimised for. For contracts, employment questions, compliance or policy work in a non-Chinese jurisdiction, the bias is a correctness problem rather than a style problem, and the cost saving does not cover the risk.

Anything with data-residency requirements you have not checked. Native access originates from China. International access runs through Volcano Engine’s international accounts or third-party gateways. If your data cannot leave a particular jurisdiction, work out which route you are actually on before you send anything real through it. This is worth a conversation with whoever owns data governance rather than a decision made by a developer with an API key.

How to access it

Three routes, in rough order of directness:

  1. Volcano Engine API directly. ByteDance’s own platform, with international account support and an English interface.
  2. OpenRouter. The usual aggregator route, useful if you want to switch models behind one integration.
  3. OpenAI-compatible gateways, which let you point an existing OpenAI SDK integration at the model by changing the model string and base URL. This is the fastest way to run a comparison against what you already use.

That third option is the one to use for evaluation, because it means you can test Doubao against your current model with a one-line change rather than a migration.

Should you just use Seed 2.1 instead?

If budget is not the binding constraint, yes. Seed 2.1 Pro is the current flagship and ByteDance reports it leading on Terminal Bench 2.1, SWE-Pro, SciCode, OSWorld, MobileWorld and MMMU-Pro. On independent testing, Code Arena placed Seed 2.1 Pro eighth with a score of 1539, described as level with Claude Opus 4.6. Cached input pricing goes as low as around 1.2 yuan per million tokens, and Seed 2.1 Turbo sits at half the Pro price again.

Two caveats on those 2.1 figures. Most of the leading claims are ByteDance’s own, and the Code Arena placement is the only independent number in that list. ByteDance has also not published a context window for 2.1, which matters if you are relying on 2.0 Pro’s 256K.

The practical rule: if you need agentic or coding performance, go to 2.1 Pro or look at GLM. If you need cheap reasoning, maths, video or bulk processing, 2.0 Pro at half the price is the better line on the invoice.

The short version

Doubao-Seed-2.0-Pro is a strong, cheap reasoning and multimodal model that is weak at agentic coding and carries a training bias you need to think about for jurisdiction-sensitive work. Its supersession by Seed 2.1 made it cheaper rather than obsolete, which is a better outcome than the usual version cycle.

Run it through a compatible gateway against your current model for an afternoon. At $0.47 input, the evaluation costs almost nothing.
