Today Luma is focused on video, images and an AI creative agent for brands. Several tool directories still describe Genie as available, with pricing and API details, but they are describing a product Luma no longer promotes. If you need text-to-3D right now, you will likely need to look elsewhere.
What Genie Did
Luma released Genie as a research preview in November 2023, then launched Genie 1.0 in January 2024, alongside its Series B funding round. Luma described it as a generative 3D model that could create almost any object in under ten seconds.
What made it practical was the output. Genie produced quad meshes with materials at any polygon count, in standard formats, so the models could go straight into 3D software and game engines. Third-party guides list export formats including GLB, OBJ and USDZ. It was available on the web and through Luma’s Discord community.
It was never meant to produce finished hero assets. Its strength was speed: quick prototypes, background props, and stylised concepts where perfect realism did not matter.
What Happened to It
The clearest evidence comes from Luma itself. Visiting lumalabs.ai/genie now sends you straight to the main homepage. And the current homepage lists Luma’s products and research in detail without a single mention of Genie or text-to-3D.
There has been no public shutdown announcement that we could find. Genie has simply dropped out of Luma’s product lineup as the company refocused.
Be careful with third-party listings. Many directories still publish Genie features, pricing and API access as if nothing changed. One guide from May 2026 even claims to have tested a newer Genie version. That could not be verified, and it conflicts with Luma’s own site. When a company’s website stops listing a product, directory pages are usually the last to notice.

Luma’s homepage also lists agency and brand clients including Dentsu, Publicis Groupe, Serviceplan and Mazda. The company is clearly positioning itself as a creative production partner for businesses rather than a toolbox of individual generators.

Why Luma Moved On
Luma started out in 3D. Its first product captured real objects and scenes as 3D models from ordinary phone video. Genie extended that into generating 3D from text.
Then, in June 2024, Luma launched Dream Machine, its video generator, and the company’s attention followed the market. Video generation has far more buyers than 3D modelling, and Luma has since built a family of video models, raised substantial funding, including a large 2025 round reportedly led by Saudi AI company Humain, and signed major brand clients.
There is a twist, though. Luma’s stated mission is now to build intelligence that can generate, understand and operate in the physical world. That is closer to its 3D roots than it might first appear. Luma has not left spatial AI behind so much as stopped selling individual 3D objects, in favour of models that understand space and motion inside video.
Don’t Confuse It With These
Google DeepMind’s Genie. DeepMind has its own models called Genie that generate interactive, explorable worlds. They share the name and nothing else.
Lu.ma. An events and ticketing platform, unrelated to Luma AI.
Luma Health. A healthcare patient-engagement company, also unrelated.
If You Need Text-to-3D Now
Several dedicated tools have grown up since Genie launched. Meshy, Tripo and Rodin are commercial text-to-3D and image-to-3D tools worth evaluating, and open-source models such as Tencent’s Hunyuan3D and Microsoft’s TRELLIS let you run generation yourself.
Whichever you try, check four things before committing.
- Mesh quality. Clean quad topology matters if the model will be animated or edited. Messy triangle meshes cost time to fix.
- Export formats. Make sure the tool exports what your software needs, such as GLB, FBX, OBJ or USDZ.
- Textures and materials. Check whether you get usable materials or just a flat colour map.
- Commercial rights. Read the licence, especially on free tiers, before using models in a paid project.
